Singing the (Microsoft) Windows Blues

September 1st, 2008

Slashdot | Why Microsoft Cozied up to Open Source at OSCON.jpg
It finally happened. A family member got a really nasty computer-virus and is now playing the re-installation game.

The only reason Windows has such a large market share is because it come on the PC you buy pre-installed. There is absolutely no way someone with moderate technical skills can install windows+drivers by themselves.

I could rant on this subject for hours.

Here is my advise.

* For a -home- computer, buy a Mac. Use what you want at work, but for home, get a Mac
* If you want to stay with Microsoft, install AVG from free.avg.com, it’s $0, so you won’t get caught without an up-to-date anti-virus solution
* You still want to stay Microsoft? Backup all your data to an external device that you DISCONNECT after the backup is finished! If this does not make sense, call me, email me, comment on this blog and I WILL HELP YOU!

I’ll add, if you got a Mac, anti-virus isn’t really as important as it is on windows (this will probably change). If you got a Mac, there is built-in software to make backups of all your data to an external device -and- on computers Apple controls on the Internet!

I’ll be blogging about this more…

Comcrap cap? What do you think?

My good friend Mikey has a good summary of Comcast’s new bandwidth cap.

First thing I tweeted was how do we know our consumption? Mike found the answer in Comcast’s FAQ. Bottom line, it’s your responsibility to track your own utilization! Yeah! I’ve used 10 bits this month! :-P
There’s a little wonky math over on wowinsider about bandwidth and playing WoW.

What do you think?

My tracking software says, I consume 1 bit per hour when I play WoW. Awesome!

Worse performance in a night of battlegrounds in a long time. Went 0/5! I’m starting to feel like BRK and/or Alliance!

WSG was the worst! 2 rog each with a Warglaive of Azzinoth, each T6 geared, working as a stealth team.

Just painful.

GLA Raid Planner Info available via RSS and twitter

August 13th, 2008

I read almost all of my “web news” via a RSS client (Google Reader FTW!). I really wanted to have GLARP Raid Planner info via RSS. I could not find anything out there specific for parsing EQDKP Raid Planner info so I wrote my own.

You can subscribe to the GLARP Raid Planner RSS feed here:

http://www.geeks.org/rss/glarp.rss

Now, when I log in to read my web news for the day, any new GLA raids will be part of RSS feeds.

I could not stop with just publishing GLARP information via RSS, now you get get GLARP information via twitter.

Just follow the twitter user called glarp and approximately 1h after a GLARP entry is added to the web site you’ll get a tweet about it.

Screenshot from osx and twhirl (twitter client) attached.

Green water! :-(

I run low chlorine in the pool. I dislike the dry skin, green hair, and blood-shot eyes. The down side can be that the water can “turn” quickly.

Sometimes in the last 3 days the water turned and I know have green-pea soup for water.

I still have some heavy duty liquid chlorine. Gonna give that a try and see if I can clear up the water.
